Higher Grades for Digital Signage in Higher Education

There’s no question that from ASI’s experience in implementing digital signage projects, this technology is more than viable for all of the major market segments that we service.  However, digital signage in higher education institutions is gaining momentum quickly, perhaps because the needs of educational institutions are so incredibly diverse, and digital signage addresses these needs extremely well.  According to ecampusnews.com this past July, 1,500 campuses added digital signage in 2010 (including 8,400 displays), with the forecast of another 2,200 campuses adding digital signage this year (another 13,000 displays). The possibilities in higher education are numerous, including but not limited to:

  • Informational – Bulletin boards and outdated paper-based communication methods can be replaced with a more attractive and effective way to communicate.
  • Wayfinding – Given that schools often use their facilities to host special public and private events, comfortably guiding visitors to a gymnasium, theatre or auditorium is a critical and dynamic requirement.
  • Menu boards – A great example is implementing a digital cafeteria menu and standardizing across a campus, district or region.
  • Create Ambience – Digital signage can be used to foster a constructive, high-morale environment in showcasing student projects and accomplishments.
  • Donor Recognition – Dynamic donor recognition is an attractive and eye-catching way to spotlight the contributions of donors.
  • Emergency Alerts – Promote on-campus safety with a highly visual way of informing faculty, staff and students in the event of severe weather or other emergency situations.

Educational institutions are beginning to ‘get-it’: they understand that digital signage represents a relatively quick and effective way to break away from the old, outdated methods of communication, and graduate to a technology that provides limitless opportunities for communication and growth.
